Student Code of Conduct

Dater is a strongly academics-oriented, college-prep school that also accomodates students who did not score high enough on the SCPP Entrance Test to qualify for the College Preparatory level of courses. All students, however, will be expected to exhibit excellent personal behavior at all times, including to and from school each day. We expect Dater students to look, act, and perform better than students from other schools. It's a little thing called PRIDE.

Code of Conduct

01.

Dater High School expects student attire and appearance to be suited to an academic setting which is business-like in nature. (Shorts inappropriate in length, halters, muscle shirts, hats, scarves, hair curlers or anything which in the opinion of the principal is distractive to others, etc. are more suited to picnics and playing than to a diligent pursuit of studies.)

02.

Students are not to wear “topcoats” (outerwear) to class or in the building. Coats must be placed in the student’s locker. However, in cold weather students may wear sweaters or lightweight jackets at the direction of the principal.

03.

Book bags must be placed in the locker (Exceptions are made through the office in writing but only in extreme situations). Book bags may be used in carrying books to and from school but NOT used in carrying books to class.

04.

Students are not to have magic markers in their possession.

05.

Students are not permitted to have electronic devices/equipment in school. Beginning with the 2004 – 2005 school year, the Board of Education has allowed students to have cell phones at school, however, those cell phones must remain turned off in all classes. Students who violate this rule will have their cell phones confiscated and held until parents come to school to retrieve them from the Assistant Principal. Students are never to use any function of cell phones in class, including texting.

06.

Each student is responsible for having their own locker. Lockers may not be shared. All students must furnish their own master lock. Students may use their locker at designated times only.

07.

Please note our policy which does not allow gum or candy to be consumed or brought onto school grounds. Gum and candy will be confiscated and discarded. Students who choose repeatedly to violate this policy will be subject to penalties in accordance with the Board of Education Policy No. 5113.2. All food and drink (at lunchtime only) must be consumed in the cafeteria. Food and drink are never allowed in any classroom.

08.

Students are to take books, materials, and supplies to each class each day.

09.

Study requires a calm, safe atmosphere. No student may threaten, harm, nor attempt to deliberately injure anyone. No student may cause disruption to any function of the school or incite others to be disruptive. Fighting will never be tolerated. Disruption and violent behavior will be dealt with severely.

10.

Theft and vandalism are crimes. No student may take or damage the property of another person in the school. Take pride in our school.

11.

Use of alcohol, narcotic substances, and cigarettes are forbidden by law to students of high school age. A student shall not possess, use, and/or sell illicit drugs or other hallucinogenic substances. No student may smoke anywhere on school grounds or in the school building. Cigarettes should not be brought to school. Lighters, cigarettes and other tobacco products will be confiscated. Possession of such items will result in automatic disciplinary action. The term smoking will include lighting a cigarette, holding a cigarette, exhaling smoke, and disposing of a lighted cigarette.

12.

The authority of staff members must be respected. Refusal to cooperate with a directive from a staff member will constitute insubordination. Disrespect, abusive language or obscene gestures are prohibited.

13.

Regular attendance and promptness are necessary to receive full benefit of the learning program. Students should bring a note from a parent to explain any absence, tardiness, or request to leave early. No student may miss a scheduled class without an official excuse slip. No student may leave the school early without written permission from the office. No student should enter the building before 7:00 AM and all students must leave the building by 2:25 PM unless under the direct supervision of a staff member.

Pupils habitually tardy to school will be given FRIDAY Evening School and referred to the Visiting Teacher.

Students are always expected to be on time to and prepared for every class throughout their school day.

14.

According to State requirements, 120 class hours constitute one course. The use of excessive absence to deny credit for a course is at the discretion of the teacher. The principal reserves the right to review all cases.

15.

Detailed directions regarding lunchroom, lockers, fire drills, etc., will be given in school.

16.

Money will not be loaned to students by the office.

17.

Students are to report directly to school each morning from their homes. Students are not to go to any other location off of school campus such as local businesses, stores, or restaurants.

18.

Under no circumstances are Dater students to be at any other school on the Western Hills campus. Any Dater student who chooses not to comply will be charged by the SRO for trespassing and suspended from school. Parents must return with student for a legal conference with the Visiting Teacher.

19.

Students who fail to respect the rights of others and violate rules will be subject to penalties in accordance with the Board of Education Policy No. 5113.2.

SPECIAL EDUCATION

Dater High School offers a variety of programs for students who have special needs. Students on an I.E.P. or a 504 program can have their needs met here at Dater High. We offer programs for students who are D.H., S.L.D., E.D., M.D., O.I./O.H.I., tutoring in all areas and speech.

Our D.H. and S.L.D. programs are cross-categorical for students in grades 7-12.

Many students are included in regular classrooms for electives and academic classes. The students are instructed based on their level of ability. The number of students in these programs is low, so students can receive individualized attention.

Our E.D. (S.B.H.) program is a self-contained unit for students in grades 7-12.

Most students in this program are included in regular education much of the day from electives, foreign languages and other academic subjects. The class has a full time I.A. for students who have to have individual assistance or time out of the regular classroom schedule.

Dater High School offers the services of an Individual/Small Group Instructor.

This service is available to the special needs student who only requires a small amount of support to be successful in the regular education program. The Individual/Small Group Instructor provides classroom support for students, as well as remedial programs to strengthen students' skills. The ISGI works with the classroom teachers to ensure the students success.

The OI/OHI program is designed for students who have an orthopedic or other health impairment which may affect their educational performance. A self-contained unit is available with inclusion in electives and academic subjects as needed in order to meet the individual needs of the student. The unit has a full time teacher and instructional assistant as well as a registered nurse.

Our Multiple Disabilities (M.D.) program is self-contained for grades 7-12, with a full time instructional assistant. In this program, students receive academic, as well as, life skills instruction. Learning is extended from the classroom to hands-on experiences both in school and throughout the community.

Dater believes that all students are unique. If you feel your child could benefit from our special and unique programs, then Dater is the place for you and your child.
