Principal's Corner -- Dr. Beverly Eby

Gilbert A. Dater High School serves students in grades 7 - 12 in the Cincinnati Public School District. Dater is a small, Academics-oriented high school whose primary mission is to prepare students for post-high school opportunities, either at a two or four year college. Dater's total student enrollment is restricted by our charter to remain at about 700 for all grades 7 through 12. Study after study proves that students are more successful at smaller, more focused, schools. Our students primarily come from the west side of Cincinnati, and our racial balance hovers around 50/50. Students who have passed the Special College Preparatory Program Test (SCPP) can attend Dater from any elementary school within the Cincinnati Public School District. There are two program choices for students who attend Dater: the Standard Program and the Special College Preparatory Program (SCPP). Students in the Standard Program are offered the same curriculum as other students in the CPS district. Students in the Special College Preparatory Program (SCPP) take accelerated learning courses in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Latin. Over 95% of the SCPP students have passed the Ohio Ninth Grade Proficiency Test.

Philosophy of Gilbert A. Dater High School

The all-inclusive purpose of the Cincinnati Public Shools shall be the perpetuation and improvement of the democratic way of life. To this end, the schools shall strive to develop in children the knowledge, skills, habits, understandings, attitudes and character traits essential for rich personal living, for sound choice of effective participation in a vocation for noble and satisfying human relationships, and for responsible, contributing citizenship.

The faculty of Gilbert A. Dater High School endeavors to develop knowledge, understanding, skills, and habits in the Dater students and to help them become productive, educated, responsible citizens in our democratic society. We, the faculty, must recognize and respect the individual rights and dignity of each child, educate, and have interest in the whole child. The child's emotional tensions, his/her academic achievement, and his/her total environment must be considered. If there is an awareness of his/her problems and pressures that occur in early adolescence, we shall be able to better understand the actions and reactions of junior and senior high school age boys and girls.

It is our responsibility to teach and enlarge upon basic ideas and ideals of democracy, to teach and expand our American heritage, and broaden understanding of community living and social awareness of our democracy. Students shall be exposed to career education. It is expected that this exposure will assist students in understanding different vocations and job expectancies. In particular, emphasis should be placed in the training of special education children in career opportunities.

Each student should also be provided with educational information and instruction that will enable him/her to meet his/her present and future needs. This information should lead him/her to a deeper appreciation for the entire learning process and to a better understanding of education as being a continuous process.

We shall strive to instill in each student a respect for authority, his/her peers, and the community. His/her personal self-image should be enhanced as he/she learns to accept society as a whole and recognize his/her part in it. It is the task of Dater teachers to prepare all students to be productive members in society.
