Hospitality and Tourism

Be a part of the largest and fastest growing industry in the world. Statistics within the industry show that a new hospitality job is created every 2.5 seconds, making it a vital sector of the world’s economy. In the United States alone, there are more than half-million hospitality jobs — a number that’s expected to substantially increase in the years ahead.

The Hospitality and Tourism Employment Pipeline is offered exclusively at Gilbert A. Dater High School to students that are enrolled in the Culinary Arts Career Tech Pathway. This is a one-year program available to juniors and seniors. Hospitality and tourism represent a broad range of career opportunities that include:

• Hotels and resorts
• Restaurants
• Meeting and event planning
• Leisure, recreation and sports management
• Airlines, cruises and other transportation
• Spa and wellness management

Students must have a 2.0 GPA and a recommendation from a teacher, school counselor or principal, a 93 percent attendance rate, and be on-track for graduation.

Classroom Instruction
For the first semester, students will attend classes at Dater High School. The course will introduce students to the many aspects of hospitality, including food, lodging, attractions, sports and much more.

To get acquainted with the numerous career options, students will tour such places as the Great American Ball Park and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center to meet and talk with employees, managers and executives.

Industry Credential
The Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA) is an industry credential; however, Ohio does not identify CTA as a credential that can be applied toward points for graduation. 

Work-Based Learning
Upon completing the first semester and earning the CTA certificate, students have an opportunity to apply for a work-based learning opportunity during the second semester. For 10 weeks, students work side-by-side with hospitality and tourism employees to get an up-close look at this vast career field. Students earn an hourly wage determined by the employer but can expect a wage of approximately $10 an hour. Work sites could include:

• Cincinnati USA Visitors Bureau
• Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza Hotel
• Sweet Petit Desserts
• Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal

While working at a hospitality site is not a requirement of the program, students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity if they are anticipating a future career in hospitality/tourism.

Transportation to Work Site
Students must provide transportation to the work site. Some assistance may be available.

Supply Chain Logistics

Supply chain encompasses both the planning, movement, storage, and processing of inventory.

Supply chain management is an important aspect of manufacturing, wholesaling and retailing. The goal of supply chain management is to have the product readily available when the consumer is ready to purchase it, at a price they are willing to pay. Jobs in this field may include:

• Distribution Manager
• Director of Purchasing
• Global Supply Chain Planner
• Supply Chain Management Analyst
• Employers such as electronics firms, manufacturing companies, software distributors and retailers typically hire supply chain management professionals.

Logistics

Logistics is about getting products from the point of departure to the point of arrival, such as the home of a consumer. Think of it this way: when an order is placed online with a big retailer, someone figures out how to deliver it quickly and efficiently. This involves overseeing areas such as packaging, routing, scheduling, preparing, distributing, delivering and warehousing. Jobs in this field may include:

• Logistics Coordinator
• Warehouse Distribution Center Operations Manager
• Logistics Manager
• Transportation Analyst
• Logistics Management Analyst
• Transportation Manager

Each field offers a variety of positions, career opportunities and room for growth.

About This Program
It is offered at Dater High School and is available for seniors. Students must have a 2.0 GPA and a recommendation from a teacher, school counselor or principal, a 93 percent attendance rate, and be on-track for graduation.

Classroom Instruction
This class is taught by instructors from Cincinnati State Technical and Community College at each high school. There is not a fee for the course. During the semester, students get acquainted with all aspects of supply chain and logistics to gain a better understanding of what career path is a good fit for them. Students will have the opportunity to tour the DHL regional hub facility where they will meet and talk with employees, managers and executives.

Industry Credential
Students can earn two industry recognized credentials, Certified Logistics Associate (CLA) and Certified Logistics Technician (CLT), which can be used toward the graduation pathway. 

Work-Based Learning
Upon completing the first semester, students can take advantage of on-the-job training during the second semester at DHL. Students must complete a DHL application and pre-employment screening to work for the company. Work shifts are from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays. Students will earn $13.55 an hour.

Transportation to Work Site
DHL will provide round-trip transportation from the school to the work site during their work-based learning experience. 

Job Prospects After Graduation
Upon successfully completing the work experience portion of the program and graduating from high school, students can apply for a full-time or part-time position with DHL. The company offers its full-time and part-time employees college tuition reimbursement and benefits.

Expected Salary in this Field
Salaries for supply chain positions range from $54,000 for entry level jobs to $77,000 for experienced workers. Salaries for logistics can range from $35,000 (national average) to $100,000 — possibly more. Like many jobs, the salary in these careers depends on education, experience, location and industry.
